In the summer of 1995, Melanie, 10, began to have symptoms that were similar to the flu. It was weeks of vomiting and feeling sick to her stomach, but there was a sign that her mother noticed, that concerned her: swollen ankles.
—
Knowing swollen ankles were a sign of heart failure, her mother, who is a nurse, took her to the local pediatrician and from there, they were immediately referred to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
—
Melanie was placed on medication to help her symptoms. But her diagnosis quickly worsened. Within a few weeks, she was struggling to breathe, move and became so frail that she would no longer participate in school. She was at end-stage heart failure and she needed a solution. She needed a new heart.
—
Melanie was admitted to our Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit and due to the severity of her heart failure, she was moved to the top of the national transplant waiting list.
—
One week later, Melanie’s new chance at life was here. Her heart transplant was so intricately orchestrated by Monica Horn, RN, CCRN, CCTC, Pierre Wong, MD, the rest of the transplant team and Vaughn A. Starnes, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon—all who are still at CHLA. Her life-saving team continued with cardiologists, Jackie Szmuszkovicz, MD, and Jondavid Menteer, MD, to closely monitor her heart health.
—
Twenty-three years later, Melanie is well and still with the same heart she received. —
"Everyday is a gift,” says Melanie. “My donor and my transplant team at CHLA have given me an extra 23 years of life so far. Words can never express my gratitude, but I hope to honor them by living every minute to its fullest."
—
Melanie graduated from UCLA with honors in Linguistics, received her Masters from Northwestern University and is now a speech-language pathologist for the public school system in San Francisco. She shares her life with her husband and dog, Fritz, and has recently become an ambassador for Donor Network West to raise awareness about organ donation. #Repost @childrensla with @insta.save.repost • • •

The storm has passed already, and the clouds have parted. Now for the cold. Zero degrees tonight. Keep warm, everyone! ❄
