"Dick Gregory was born in 1932 in St. Louis, Missouri. Gregory got his big break performing as a stand-up comedian at the Playboy Club in the early 1960s. Known for his sophisticated, layered humor that took on racial issues of the day, Gregory became a comedy headliner and a trailblazer for other African-American comedians including Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby. 91 year old Mrs Elsie Della Franca and her now passed husband Joe have been growing buckwheat for close to 50 years on their property 4km south of Pemberton. Here with her character-full son John, they continue this wonderful culinary history albeit now Elsie more on ‘fritterli’ duty than the threshing table. They’re my neighbours and an absolute joy to visit. As is always their Italian-roots generous custom, visits are long, full of cheeky stories & arms never left empty on leaving. Along with buckwheat it was a bucket of macadamia nuts today. "Royal owned and operated Royal’s Hearthside Restaurant in Rutland Vt. He began his career as a dishwasher and worked his way through culinary school. 
In 1962, he and his wife, Willa, opened Royal’s Hearthside. He also was our first African-American board member and chairman of our human resources committee. Gerry Fernandez, CEO of the MultiCultural Foodservice & Hospitality Alliance, which became part of our association late last year, was a cook in Royal’s kitchen. He often called him “The Jackie Robinson of the foodservice industry.”
Royal established the Culinary Institute of America’s Willa and Ernie Royal Endowed Scholarship Fund for Minority Students. He died in 1994."

@into.my.kitchen’s hand sprinkling flaked charcoal sea salt over the plated (bowled?😆) first course of last night’s #popupdinner - LETTUCE SOUP with croutons! This is a #historicalrecipe, but totally something I’m gonna make again for modern life:
2 big onions
5 cups broth
1 potato
2 lbs frozen peas
2 cups mixed lettuce
butter
S&P
🌿🍃🌿🍃🌿🍃🌿🍃🌿🍃
Sauté onions in butter.
When onions are translucent, add peeled & cubed potato (cubed so it cooks faster).
Add 5 cups water + #betterthanbouillon or stock. (I used BtB #nochicken.)
Stir & bring to a boil. Simmer until potatoes are done.
Add lettuce & peas, & bring to a boil.
Turn off heat. (If you cook for longer, you’ll lose the bright green color & it’ll turn a dull, dank green.)
Purée soup with immersion blender.
S&P, then taste-test.
Top with croutons- fresh bread ripped into pieces & left out overnight to grow hard, then tossed in butter/olive oil with S&P, and baked in a 375 degree oven for 15 min tops. 👍

The much-loved Margherita pizza was the result of a gift to the Queen Margherita of Italy by Raffaelo Esposito, a pizza maker, in 1889. The queen liked his creation of a pizza with tomato, olive oil, mozzarella cheese and basil which paid homage to the Italian tricolor. He named his creation after the queen - and the rest they say, is history.
